A Love for PEI runs strong in my Blood

My story is close to my heart for many reasons; it involves heritage and pride, but also self-discovery. I’d never heard of PEI 5 years ago, which changed in 2005 when my family got a letter with “Farmer” branded on the top. My dad knew his dad grew up in PEI, but nothing more. My grandpa attended UPEI when it was St. Dunstan Univ. Once I set foot on the Island, I knew I NEEDED to see UPEI. I spent the day on campus and knew this was the location of my future. Two years later, I was accepted and I knew it was the right decision. I remember the day I told my grandpa about UPEI. His face lit up and I saw the pride clearly in his eyes. The feeling that I made him proud is an indescribable feeling. My faculty is nutrition, in Dalton Hall, which happens to be the dorm that my grandpa lived in while at St. Dunstan. Coincidence? I see it as a sign that I’m on the right track. I believe that in self-discovery you have to understand the past to fuel the future. And I’m achieving that at UPEI.
This is my Grandfather, J. Ivan. Farmer. Graduate of St. Dunstan University. Class of 1946.
