My mother instilled in her ten children a strong belief in education and she worked in resturants and cleaned houses to ensure her children received an education. Three of her children received thier undergarduate degrees at UPEI, and it has been a great employer to 2 of her other children.
Her belief in education came from her upbringing and her story is captured in a book entitled: A Prince Edward Island Mother's Legacy of Love Margaret McAvoy-Griffin-Mullen: Her Life and Recipes. This book chronicles her life as an orphan, a foster child, a wife, a mother to ten children, a widow, and as a bride for the second time. It is filled with stories about her life in the orphanage in Halifax, growing up in Brookvale, and raising a family in Emyvale.
Her dream to become a nurse but she was taken out of school at grade 8. A scholarship in her name has been established at the School of Nursing,in this way, her legacy continues so that others may fulfill thier dreams!
